Locating pressures on water, energy and land resources across global supply chains

چکیده
Hotspots of resource use in country and sector supply chains are poorly understood, due part to the unitary nature environmental footprinting assessment. Understanding profile dependencies across their entire chain is needed inform integrated management. Within this study pressures global water, energy land (WEL) system located along networks 189 countries 24 sectors. These profiles reveal focal tier(s) where WEL arise. Viewed through a lens, pathways found be mainly indirect, arising from on immediate (tier two) upstream three+) producers network. However, distribution these varies within between national sectoral systems, requiring tailored management mitigate multiple impacts. differences pressure sectors scarcely recognised by existing modelling approaches or supplier reporting guidelines, but major consequence optimal system. If measures not taken extend accountability for indirect imposed system, burden consumption will greatly mismanaged.

The Spanish Food Industry on Global Supply Chains and Its Impact on Water Resources
The study of the impact of economic activities on natural resources through global supply chains is increasingly demanded in the context of the growing globalization of economies and product fragmentation. Taking Spain as a case study and a sector with significant economic and environmental impacts, the agri-food industry, the objective of this work is two-fold. First, we estimate the associate...
متن کاملLand Use, Climate, and Water Resources-Global Stages of Interaction.
Land use and climate change can accelerate the depletion of freshwater resources that support humans and ecosystem services on a global scale. Here, we briefly review studies from around the world, and highlight those in this special issue. We identify stages that characterize increasing interaction between land use and climate change. During the first stage, hydrologic modifications and the bu...
متن کاملGlobal change pressures on soils from land use and management.
Soils are subject to varying degrees of direct or indirect human disturbance, constituting a major global change driver. Factoring out natural from direct and indirect human influence is not always straightforward, but some human activities have clear impacts. These include land-use change, land management and land degradation (erosion, compaction, sealing and salinization). The intensity of la...

15 صفحه اولGlobal land and water grabbing.
Societal pressure on the global land and freshwater resources is increasing as a result of the rising food demand by the growing human population, dietary changes, and the enhancement of biofuel production induced by the rising oil prices and recent changes in United States and European Union bioethanol policies. Many countries and corporations have started to acquire relatively inexpensive and...
